Securing a Pathology Office Network Without Disrupting Clinical Operations

CLIENT
Regional Pathology Collection Centre, NSW

SCOPE
Network security assessment, firewall upgrade, VLAN segmentation, and secure remote access setup

“QVR delivered exactly what we needed — no disruption, no noise, and they explained everything in a way our non-technical staff could understand. We now have full confidence in our network.”

Clinic Manager, Pathology Office

THE CHALLENGE

This busy pathology centre handles sensitive patient data, pathology reports, and digital diagnostics across multiple clinics. Their IT partner flagged several issues:

  • Outdated firewall hardware
  • Unsegmented network (staff devices, lab systems, and guest Wi-Fi on the same subnet)
  • No secure remote access protocol for staff working across satellite clinics

The client needed a robust, compliant network security solution — but without impacting day-to-day lab or admin operations.

OUR APPROACH

QVR conducted a full network security audit, identifying priority risks and recommending a staged, low-disruption upgrade path. We worked closely with the IT provider and lab team to:

  • Replace the existing firewall with a next-generation device featuring real-time intrusion prevention and threat detection
  • Configure VLANs to segment clinical systems, admin devices, and guest Wi-Fi — improving security and network performance
  • Enable secure VPN access for mobile pathologists and admin staff working across multiple sites
  • Document and label all patching in the comms rack for clarity
  • Perform upgrades after hours and on weekends to avoid interfering with patient services

THE RESULT

  • Clinical and admin systems now operate on isolated, secure network zones
  • Staff can safely work remotely with protected access to internal systems
  • The organisation meets data protection and healthcare compliance standards
  • Faster network speeds due to traffic separation
  • All work completed with zero disruption to pathology services
